Barae Abigail Yu

I’m Barae Abigail Yu, a 17-year-old Kiwi from Auckland, New Zealand, who moved to LA, California. As a child, I loved spending time at the beach, and those trips sparked my curiosity with sea life and the unique ecosystems that sustain them, much like the ones we humans need to rely on. This passion has led me to focus on marine biology and environmental studies, where hands-on research and experimentation can help solve ocean-related problems around the world.

So, Who Am I?

I’m a Korean-New Zealander, who was born and raised in New Zealand for the first 14 years of my life before moving to the U.S. Being exposed to two different cultures the moment I was born, shaped my diverse character. Korean culture taught me how gratitude and respect are important, and Maori culture taught me the importance of pride and community. Blended, my character represents a strong-minded, resilient, and the ability to connect with others.

Music has always been my way of connecting with others and expressing myself. It began with the piano, then the cello, then the electric guitar, and finally, the bass guitar. What started as a simple hobby, like listening to metal music, soon grew into something more meaningful when I began learning my favourite songs on the bass.

Through that process, I discovered new subgenres, stories, and a newfound confidence that eventually led me to join a band. Being part of that band has pushed me to connect with like-minded friends, take on leadership, and express my emotions in ways words often can’t.

Ever since I was a child, the beach has been my go-to place for spending time with family and friends, a common gathering spot that always felt like a second home. Even Christmas was at the beaches too! It created a bond between me and the ocean like no other.
