Barae Abigail Yu

I’m Barae Abigail Yu, a 17-year-old Kiwi from Auckland, New Zealand, who moved to LA, California. Ever since birth, my parents loved taking me down to the beach, and I loved spending time there. These trips sparked my curiosity about sea life and the ecosystems that keep them alive, much like the ones we humans rely on. This passion has led me to focus on marine biology and environmental studies, where hands-on research and experimentation can help solve ocean-related problems around the world.

So, Who Am I?

I’m a Korean-New Zealander, who was born and raised in New Zealand for the first 14 years of my life before moving to the U.S. Being exposed to two different cultures the moment I was born, shaped my diverse character. Korean culture taught me how gratitude and respect are important, and Maori culture taught me the importance of pride and community. Blended, my character represents a strong-minded, resilient, and the ability to connect with others.

I discovered new subgenres, styles, and a newfound confidence that led me to join a band. Being part of that band has pushed me to connect with new friends, take on a leadership role, and express my emotions in ways I used to not be able to.

During childhood, the beach has been my go-to place for spending time with family and friends, a common kiwi gathering spot that always felt like a second home. Even Christmas was at the beaches too! It created a bond between me and the ocean like no other.

Music has always been my way of connecting with others and expressing myself. It began with the piano, then the cello, then the electric guitar, and now, the bass guitar. What started as a simple hobby, like listening to metal music, grew into something more meaningful when the moment I picked up the bass.
